INTRODUCING... THE BEST BAR NONE EVENT VENUES

Unique new category added to the Best Bar None program

Best Bar None has added an interesting new category to the growing program.

The Event Venue category was introduced to the program after a discussion with one of the program's accredited stakeholders - Northlands Park. The Northlands group joined Best Bar None in 2014 when their Casino operation achieved accreditation - and earned the inaugural Best Casino title. They wondered if their Edmonton Expo Centre could pursue BBN accreditation - they found the review of industry best practices was helpful to their operations.

So the BBN Event Venue category was created, with its own unique Checklist, slightly different than the Criteria Checklist used for the bars, pubs and clubs in BBN. This checklist reflects the differences between these operations and a 'bar'.

An "Event Venue" is certainly different than a typical bar, pub or club:

  • They are only operational when an event (concert, conference, dramatic performance, ballet, corporate booking, etc.) is booked.
  • Events at a venue are different from night to night, offering different challenges and issues.
  • Guests usually arrive and depart en masse before and after events, creating potential crowding problems.
  • Alcohol service may or may not be part of the event.

But bars and Event Venues do share some things in common:

  • Guest - and staff - safety is still a priority.
  • Crowd management and supervision is important.
  • When liquor is served, responsible liquor service is practiced.
  • Customer service and a top-notch guest experience is essential.

The Event Venue category was introduced in Edmonton when four different Event Venues earned Best Bar None accreditation at the 6th Annual Best Bar None Accreditation and Awards Event on November 26, 2015.

The category will be introduced to Calgary and Grande Prairie in 2016.

Here are the current accredited Best Bar None Event Venues:

Bar / Lounge Category

The Bar / Lounge Category in Best Bar None is the most diverse group among the many categories.

The Bar / Lounge Category has featured live music venues, cocktail lounges, sports bars and VLT bars. Basically, any bar that doesn't fit the other specialized categories (i.e, not a pub, not a club, not a hotel bar) would be categorized as Bar / Lounge. What they all have in common, however, is providing top-notch service in a comfortable and safe environment.

There are currently 10 bars accredited in this category in Edmonton and five in Calgary.

Here are the current accredited Bar / Lounge establishments:

Campus Bar Category

The Campus Bar category is one of the newest categories in Best Bar None.

Post-secondary institutions commonly operate on-campus licensed premises for students to gather, socialize and wind down during the busy school year. It is not uncommon that undergraduates get their early bar experiences at their local campus bar.

As these pubs and bars are operated by the institution or, more commonly, the Student's Union or Association, duty of care is paramount. A student should be able to enjoy drinks and food with friends in a safe and supervised environment.

Luckily, campus bars have a number of resources available to them to increase safety. These can include:

  • Campus Security available
  • Safewalk programs
  • Commitment to training (first aid, safe food handling)
  • Campus emergency evacuation procedures

The Campus Bar category was added to Calgary's Best Bar None program in June of 2015 and Edmonton in November of 2015.

Here are the current accredited Campus Bars:

Casino Category

The Casino category is one of the newest categories in Best Bar None.

Casinos in Edmonton, Calgary and Grande Prairie have recently joined the Best Bar None program.

Although gaming is the primary activity in a casino, responsible liquor service and patron management is important to running a welcoming and competitive casino.

In order to provide a well-rounded gaming experience for guests, casinos can add value to the experience by featuring live music, cocktail service and wine lists, sports bars and lounges. And the food is top-notch at all the casinos.

Along with all the amenities and the gaming activities, safety and security is vital to running a casino. Achieving Best Bar None accreditation helps demonstrate that commitment to guest safety, especially in the areas of responsible liquor service, patron management and emergency evacuation and response.

Casinos have a number of resources available to them to increase safety. These can include:

  • Trained security teams
  • Video surveillance
  • Commitment to training (first aid, safe food handling)
  • Strong communication between management, staff and security

The Casino category was introduced to Edmonton's Best Bar None program in November of 2014 and in Calgary in June of 2015. As well, the Great Northern Casino in Grande Prairie successfully achieved accreditation in the Grande Prairie program in November of 2015.

Club Category

The Club Category in Best Bar None is a smaller category, but features some busy and high-profile operations.

When many people imagine nightlife and the bar scene, quite often the images conjured up are crowded dance floors, lineups at the door, burly door staff and loud music. These are Nightclubs.

When people want to 'let loose' on a night out, clubs can be a popular destination, offering loud music, elaborate light shows, dancing and socializing.

Whether they are country and western-themed clubs or Top 40, electronic, hip-hop or any of the other genres of nightclubs out there, all these clubs share some common challenges:

  • Clubs appeal to a late-night crowd.
  • They can become busy and noisy.
  • Many clubs appeal to a younger clientele.

These, and other, factors increase the chances of problems such as noise, violence, overcrowding, illegal drugs, overconsumption of alcohol or issues with minors.

Therefore, clubs employ and invest in many tools and procedures to decrease risk. These can include:

  • Hiring and investing in door security staff;
  • ID scanning at the door;
  • Pat-downs and/or bag searches;
  • Monitoring of patrons throughout the evening; and
  • Surveillance cameras.

A Best Bar None-accredited club strives to provide a safer environment for their guests, despite the challenges.

Hotel Bar Category
Restaurant and Bar Category

The Hotel Bar and the Restaurant and Bar Categories in Best Bar None are two of the newest categories of bars in the program. They were created after splitting up a previous category in two parts.

In Year Two of the Best Bar None program, the Hotel / Restaurant Lounge category was introduced. This category was used in Edmonton for Years 2-5 and in Calgary for the first four years. This category recognized bars, pubs or lounges that operated in conjunction with a restaurant or hotel operation - a great example would be a hotel bar such as The Other Side Sports Bar at Hotel Blackfoot or a Boston Pizza licensed Lounge.

It was decided to split the Hotel / Restaurant Lounge category into two new distinct categories:

  • Hotel Bar
  • Restaurant and Bar

Both groups were growing in numbers and it was discovered that they each had distinct operational challenges. We look forward to more establishments in each category joining Best Bar None in the future.

These new categories were introduced in Edmonton in Year Six and will be added to Calgary's Best Bar None category list for Year Five, accredited in May of 2016.

Here are the current accredited establishments in the Hotel Bar and Restaurant and Bar categories in Edmonton - and the accredited Hotel/Restaurant Lounges in Calgary.

Large Pub Category

The Large Pub Category in Best Bar None is one of the bigger categories of bars in the program. To distinguish from the Pub category, a Large Pub features an Occupancy Load - their capacity - of over 245 people. They are much bigger operations than the cozier and smaller Pubs.

Pubs are very popular in both cities. They offer great food during lunch hours and comfortable surroundings throughout the afternoon and evening.

However, at a large pub, you will also find the volume will rise and the level of activity will go up in the evening, especially on weekends. A DJ and dance floor is not uncommon.

These large pubs may also employ security staff to greet and monitor patrons, check ID at the door and help ensure a safer night out for all guests and fellow staff members.

There are currently 18 Large Pubs accredited in Calgary and Edmonton, nine in each city.

Here are your Best Large Pub accredited bars in Calgary and Edmonton:

Pub Category

The Pub Category in Best Bar None is the biggest single category in Best Bar None Calgary and Edmonton.

Pubs are very popular in both cities. They offer great food during lunch hours and comfortable surroundings throughout the afternoon and evening.

Quite often, these pubs feature an English or Irish (and, in a couple instances, Scottish or German) theme. You could also find a large comfortable bar for conversation and a pint, cozy booth or snug seating, an array of draught beer and cozy wooden décor.

And every successful pub earns a loyal following of regular patrons. That loyal following is earned by building trust that the staff and management will provide friendly service, value and safety. This is why so many pubs are proud to display their Best Bar None accreditation status at the door.

There are currently 18 Pubs accredited in Calgary and 14 in Edmonton.

Best Staff - Best Bars

Best Bar None launches new campaign profiling the industry's best staff

Best Bar None has recently launched a new ad campaign to showcase staff from several Best Bar None accredited bars, pubs and clubs.

"Best Staff - Best Bars" puts the spotlight on the servers, managers, door staff and bartenders who work hard to provide top-notch service to patrons. That includes watching out for guests' safety.

"In order for a bar to provide a safer environment for patrons, the front-line staff need to be dedicated to customer service," explains Eric Baich, Manager of Social Responsibility - Liquor for the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission (AGLC). "Patron safety and responsible liquor service are natural by-products of customer service. We want to recognize the individuals who are committed to doing the 'little things' that make their bar one of the best."

"The 'little things' can mean calling a cab for a patron, monitoring liquor consumption and intervening tactfully or simply following the establishment's house rules. The goal of this campaign is to recognize the individuals who are committed to providing above and beyond customer service."

The first group of Best Staff are from the following BBN-accredited bars:

  • Bottlescrew Bill's Pub - Calgary
  • Hudsons Canadian Taphouse (Crowfoot) - Calgary
  • Jetz Bar and Lounge at Best Western Port O'Call Hotel - Calgary
  • St. James Corner Irish Pub - Calgary
  • Flair Lounge / Mama Pizza (Mill Woods) - Edmonton
  • Sherlock Holmes Pub (Rice Howard Way) - Edmonton

More staff will be profiled over the next few months.

BEST BAR NONE "AWARD WINNERS SUMMIT"

Best Bar/Lounge Winners Meet in YYC

A trip to Calgary to see a Flames hockey game turned into an impromptu Best Bar None "Award Winners Summit" in Calgary.

"While making last-minute plans for a trip to Calgary, I thought it would be great to visit the other Best Bar/Lounge down there - and we decided to bring our trophy along for the ride," said Marko Slaney, manager at Edmonton's On The Rocks, which was just named Best Bar/Lounge at November's Best Bar None Edmonton Accreditation and Awards Event.

Slaney made a point of stopping in at Melrose Café and Bar on 17th Avenue with the Best Bar/Lounge trophy in hand. "It was a good chance to meet the staff, see their BBN trophy and talk shop."

Melrose manager Walter Gilmore enjoyed the encounter. "It was great to meet our counterparts from Edmonton. We take pride in providing a safer, more comfortable and more enjoyable experience for our customers - so do they."

CALGARY - Bars, pubs, clubs and lounges in Calgary are once again being invited to take part in Best Bar None (BBN). The City of Calgary, Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission (AGLC) and Calgary Police Service (CPS) encourage Calgary's eligible minors-prohibited licensed establishments to apply for BBN accreditation - a status that identifies the venue as committed to providing a safer night out for patrons.

The program, which was introduced in Calgary in 2012, currently boasts 29 accredited bars, pubs, clubs and lounges. These establishments will remain BBN-accredited until May of 2013, when this year's assessments have been completed and the newest group of successfully accredited bars are announced.

Best Bar None Assessor talks about his involvement with the program...

"Working with Best Bar None as an assessor is a unique experience. Not many people get to meet with a bar owner or manager for three hours and discuss house policies, staff training, industry best practices and patron safety.

Myths are shattered during a Best Bar None assessment. Whenever issues arise in or around bars or nightclubs, the assumption is often that the establishments themselves are trouble spots. While no two assessments are ever the same, it's clear that all applicants share a common goal - patron and employee safety. And, Best Bar None provides these venues with an opportunity to demonstrate how they are meeting it.

Since Best Bar None launched in Alberta in the summer of 2010, I have taken part in 24 different assessments in Calgary and Edmonton. I've discovered that every bar has its own character and style. The size, the neighbourhood, the clientele and the years of experience at the managerial level all make a difference in how the business is run. Although every bar is evaluated using the same criteria, bars find unique ways to achieve or implement these best practices with varying degrees of success.

The nightlife business is dynamic and unique; there are many different ways for a bar to become a responsible industry leader."

Best Bar None Accreditation and Awards

Wondering how the group of accredited venues earned their accreditation status or what qualifies them for awards? Read through the answers to the questions below to find out (click questions to view).

What types of things did the venues need to do to receive accreditation?

The Best Bar None program uses three categories of criteria - Essential, Desired and Bonus. The criteria items are based on liquor legislation and regulation, the AGLC policies and industry best practices.

The applicants were required to achieve all Essential criteria to be accredited. The Essential criteria cover a wide range of hospitality business management practices, including:

  • security and patron management
  • responsible liquor service
  • drugs and first aid
  • issues relating to the premises (glass and fire safety)
  • patron transportation
  • litter and waste management
  • compliance with regulations, i.e. no disciplinary action in the 12 months prior to the assessment date.
How do accredited venues get considered for an award?

If the applicants meet all of the Essential criteria, they are accredited. Achievement of some or all of the requirements included in the other two categories of criteria - Desired and Bonus - results in accreditation and eligibility for an award in one of the five categories - pub, large pub, bar/lounge, hotel/restaurant lounge, club.

The Desired criteria are basically a step above the Essential criteria, while the Bonus criteria are a step above the Desired.

For example, in the area of patron management and safety, one of the Essential criteria requires that the venue have a written policy regarding weapons found or removed from patrons. The Desired criteria include having a security surveillance/camera system that records interior and/or exterior/parking area and the Bonus criteria include using a scanning system and/or metal detectors or wands at entrances.

Or, in the area of emergency preparedness, one of the Essential criteria requires that the venue have a written procedure for premises evacuation in the event of an emergency (fire, power loss, etc.). The Desired criteria include having a written incident reporting system that is kept up to date and the Bonus criteria include conducting and documenting quarterly mock evacuation training exercises with staff.

And, in the area of patron transportation, for example, one of the Essential criteria requires that the venue support a transportation program such as Designated Driver, #TAXI, "My Safe Ride Home", etc. with applicable signage posted in patron areas as well as near public telephones. The Desired criteria include having a designated drop off and pick up area and the Bonus criteria include documenting any incidences of patrons refusing safe transportation.

Venues compete for 1st and 2nd Runners-Up and a Winner in their category. When selecting the candidates for awards, the applications that met the greatest number of Desired and/or Bonus criteria are forwarded to the judging panel, for their review and identification of the award winners. In addition, the assessors provide the judging panel with their general impressions of the businesses.

For how long is the accreditation valid?

Best Bar None accreditation is valid for one year. To make sure the licensed premises are maintaining the highest standards of safety and customer service, applications and assessments for Best Bar None accreditation are done on a yearly basis. This means existing accredited venues are expected to re-apply annually and undergo a successful assessment to retain their accreditation status. This also affords previously non-accredited licensed premises the opportunity to raise their standards and gain accreditation.
